The Brewers, the brewhouse

Our Mission Statement - We intend to produce the finest product humanly possible, at every level.  We believe that beer should be as delicious as it is refined, approachable, and of course, fun.  We believe that Independent Beer is not just an industry; it is a family, a community, and a revolution.  Above all else, we believe in working hard, and reveling in the fruits of our labor.
Our Brewmaster and co-owner, Dave Marliave, got his start in the industry at a young age.  Inheriting a love of homebrewing from his mother, and starting his professional career right next door at Oregon Trail Brewing, he quickly became one of the youngest brewers operating in the nation.  After three years in business, Dave led his small brewing team to a double medal GABF victory in 2013, with our Tailgater Kolsch taking a Silver in the German Style Kolsch Category, and our Little Green Dry Hopped Session Saison earning a Bronze in the American-Belgo Category.  Dave is a young brewer with a passion for both traditional styles, and category bending one offs.

We opened the doors here at Flat Tail in 2010; brewing over 100 unique beers in our first full year of business.  Since then, we have brewed many more styles, garnered GABF medal's along with local people's choice awards, and quadrupled our production.  After almost four years of brewing on our tiny 6bbl system, we purchased and installed a locally built custom system, designed for us by the wonderful folks at Metalcraft Fabrication, just an hour and a half North in Portland, Oregon. Our beautiful all-American Brewhouse includes a 13' tall, 8' wide mash tun, with one of the first "Star-Bottom" lauter systems produced on the west coast.  This behemoth vessel allows us to sparge without a pump, leading to gentler treatment of our wort, and significantly less electrical demand, reducing our environmental impact during every single batch.  Unlike many breweries, our commitment to buying local doesn't stop at our brewhouse.  Every single fermenter in our building has been designed and built right here in Oregon, with American stainless steel.  We even use a ten foot long Corvallis crafted maple mash paddle to mix our grain.
